Glossary of Terms

IMAGE Street

Here is an explanation of some of the terms used on this website.

Being Processed

If your bid for a property is shown as 'being processed', it mean the advertiser is proceeding with an exchange with someone else who bid for their property. If that xchange falls through, you will be able to bid for it again if you are still interested.

Bid

This is the name used for letting the landlord (for a CBL property) or the other applicant (for an Mutual Exchange) know that you are interested in their property. Bids can be made over the internet, the telephone, using one of our kiosks or in person at one of our offices.

CBL

CBL stands for Choice Based Lettings, it is the name given to the way Council and housing association properties are advertised and offered. Derby Homefinder was one of the first CBL schemes in the UK, starting in 2002.

Confirmation

If your bid for an Mutual Exchange property is accepted by the advertiser ('nominated'), you will need to confirm you are still interested in the Mutual Exchange and want to go ahead.

Mutual Exchange

Where two council or housing association tenants agree to swap homes (with their landlords' approval). Derby Home Swap is a new online mutual exchange scheme designed to make the whole process much smoother.

My Mutual Exchange

This is the tab on the 'Login/Your Status' page that will tell you everything you need to know about your Derby Home Swap application. You can see the status of your application and property advert, what is happening on any bids you have made and whether or not anyone has bid for your property.

Nomination

After you bid for a Mutual Exchange property, the current tenant will review all the bids that have been placed on their property, and choose one they want to exchange with. This is called a 'nomination'. You can only have one nomination in progress at a time.

Nominated Shortlist

If you bid for several Mutual Exchange properties, and are nominated by more than one of them, all of your nominations will be listed together. You can review all of the nominations and decide which one of them you want to go ahead with.

Rejection

At any stage in the process, either landlord can reject the Mutual Exchange for a range of reasons (such as rent arrears). The advertiser can also reject any of the bids made on their property if they are not interested in exchanging with that person - this is sometimes referred to as 'skipping' an applicant.

Shortlist

The list of all the people who have bid for a property.

Skip

This is when the advertiser decides he or she does not want to exchange with one of the people who bid for their property.

Reminder

Please do not make any arrangements to move house without written approval from your landlord.
