Derby Homefinder

People with Disabilities

The Council can offer you help to find a suitable property or make adaptions to your existing property if you or someone in your household has a disability. The options available will depend on your current circumstances.

Council’s own housing stock

If you are a council tenant or are a member of a tenant’s family and need help adapting your home to meet your needs, we may be able to make adaptations for you. We may ask an Occupational Therapist to visit you to see what adaptations you would need. For small changes such as grab rails, we probably would not have to carry out an assessment. For more information contact Community Care Services on 01332 256483.

Sometimes, it is not possible to carry out the work you need in the property you are living in. In these circumstances we would help to find you a more suitable property. We have a small number of properties that have been specifically built for disabled people or which have had lots of work to make them suitable for people with certain disabilities. We want to make sure we make the best use of these properties and if those properties become empty, we will give priority to those people who need the adaptations at the property.

If you are a Housing Association tenant and need help adapting your home we may also be able to help but you may be asked to contribute towards the cost.

Adapted Council and Housing Association properties will normally be advertised through Derby Homefinder. The advert will give details of any adaptation and who we would give priority to. To search for Council and Housing Association properties currently available click Property Search.

Privately Owned Housing

If you own your property or privately rent and need help with the cost of adapting your home so that you can continue to live there, you may be able to get a Disabled facilities grant. This can be used for essential adaptations to give you better freedom of movement into and around your home and to provide essential facilities in your home.

A grant is paid when the Council considers that the changes are necessary to meet your needs and is satisfied that the work is reasonable and practical. To make sure that the grant goes to the most needy households, the amount of grant you get will be decided by a means test, which will look at the income and capital of you and your spouse or partner. For more information contact 01332 255235.
